Artist Statement

Space Junkie was primarily inspired by two of my favorite things: the song “Space Junk” by Wang Chung and the anime “Space Dandy.”

Anime is defined by “hand-drawn and computer animation originating from or associated with Japan.” The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media. Outside Japan, anime refers specifically to animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes.

Just like the cartoons we have here in the States, despite the social stigma, anime isn’t strictly created for children. In fact, there are several shows that are marketed towards teenagers, young adults, and mature audiences. “Space Dandy” is one of them.
